Bluffton Community Rallies Around Local News Platform
In the quaint town of Bluffton, it seems like everyone is getting in on the action as the beloved Bluffton Icon rapidly approaches a remarkable milestone: nearly 7,000 Facebook fans! This growth can be attributed to the vibrant community spirit and the publication’s dedication to keeping everyone informed about local happenings.
A Nod to the Past
The Bluffton Icon has become a staple in the community since its inception in the fall of 2009, thanks to the vision of Fred Steiner. He took the leap from editing a traditional, subscriber-based print newspaper to embracing the digital age with a free online news platform supported by local advertising. This shift has opened the door for community engagement in a way that the printed word simply can’t match.
As the years rolled on, Steiner founded another fantastic resource called the Ada Icon in 2012. Although Steiner is no longer at the helm, the passion for local news continues to thrive under new ownership. Paula Pyzik Scott, who stepped in as the owner-editor of both the Bluffton and Ada Icons in September of 2021, is fully committed to nurturing this legacy.
Community Engagement and Local Support
The Bluffton Icon not only thrives on community support but also relies heavily on local content creators for tips, inquiries, and media releases. Some current contributors include names like Benji Bergstrand, Marvin Foster, and Liz Gordon-Hancock, to name just a few. The overwhelming support from advertisers—who are all local businesses—has kept the publication afloat since day one. Many of these advertisers have been loyal supporters from the beginning, reinforcing the idea that we’re all in this together.
Bringing People Together
The engagement doesn’t stop there! A poll has been launched to see how many of the 7,000 fans are newcomers versus those who’ve been with us for up to 16 years. This poll represents a great opportunity to collaborate and understand what the community wants more of from their local news source.
